Combe Martin residents queued in anticipation of the opening of a new bakery overlooking the village beach on 30 June 2023.

Bobbie’s Bakes, run by Bobbie Simons and Ian Hicks, has converted a former public convenience into an attractive store selling a large selection of  food and bakery items. The business started during the pandemic, operating from a small industrial unit, and built up its clientele to the point where it needed a bigger, more central retail outlet.

The new store was officially opened in June by Combe Martin Councillor Martin Worth and supported by Mayor of Ilfracombe Dan Turton.

As well as bringing the building back into use, the renovation used a lot of recycled materials. Ian completed all the building work with his father, Ken, and recycled wood from pallets for many of the internal fittings.

The business was closed for weeks during the renovation and has now resumed baking bread, cakes, buns, scones, pies, pasties and more.

Freshly made sandwiches and rolls, baked potatoes, breakfast baps and coffee are all now available, as are cream teas, a selection of deli items and cold drinks. Bobbie’s Bakes aims to open every day during the summer season.
